The DBT MK Bhan – Young Researcher Fellowship Program (MKB-YRFP) is a premier initiative by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. Eligibility Criteria
- Nationality:
- The applicant must be an Indian citizen.
- Educational Qualification:
- Must hold a Ph.D. in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, or related fields.
- Candidates who have submitted their Ph.D. thesis but are awaiting the degree are also eligible. The fellowship will commence only after the degree is awarded.
- Age Limit:
- The upper age limit is 35 years as of the application deadline.
- Employment Status:
- The applicant must not hold any permanent position at any institute or university.
- Mentor and Host Institute:
- Each applicant must identify a mentor and a DBT-Autonomous Institute as the host institute.
- The mentor and the institute must endorse the application.
- Publication Record:
- Applicants must have an excellent track record of peer-reviewed publications, patents, or technologies developed.
- Fellowship Exclusivity:
- Applicants cannot hold more than one fellowship simultaneously.
Fellowship Benefits
- Monthly Fellowship:
- A consolidated remuneration of ₹90,000 per month.
- Research Grant:
- ₹10 lakhs for the first year (for equipment and consumables).
- ₹20 lakhs per year for the second and third years (for manpower, travel, and contingency expenses).
- Manpower Support:
- Fellows can hire one Junior Research Fellow (JRF), Senior Research Fellow (SRF), Project Assistant, or Project Associate.
- Equipment Procurement:
- Equipment worth up to ₹10 lakhs can be purchased in the first year.
- Additional Opportunities:
- Fellows are eligible to apply for other research grants as a co-principal investigator.
Host Institute and Work Conditions
- Host Institutes:
- The fellowship must be undertaken at a DBT-Autonomous Institute. A list of eligible institutes is available on the DBT website.
- Laboratory Space:
- The host institute must provide necessary laboratory space and basic facilities for research.
- Change of Host Institute or Mentor:
- Fellows can change their host institute or mentor once during the fellowship tenure, subject to DBT’s approval.
- Professional Visits:
- Fellows may travel abroad for up to three months for professional training related to the project, with prior approval.
Selection Process
- Initial Screening:
- Applications will be screened for completeness and eligibility.
- Expert Evaluation:
- A national-level selection committee will evaluate the research proposals based on originality, feasibility, and alignment with national priorities.
- Final Selection:
- Selected candidates will be notified through the DBT portal.

- Fellowship Termination:

- Annual progress reports and financial utilization certificates must be submitted by the host institute to DBT.
