About the Fellowship

The MSI Fellowship supports research aligned with IRRI’s mission to improve rice productivity and sustainability. Fellows will work on cutting-edge projects under the guidance of world-class IRRI scientists. The program provides a unique opportunity to address critical issues in rice science, including climate change adaptation, sustainable agriculture, and the use of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence.


Available Research Topics

MSI fellows will engage in groundbreaking research on the following topics:

  1. Potential of Smallholder Institutions: Ensuring quality seed access, varietal scaling, and adoption in South Asia.
  2. AI-Based Trait Mapping: Exploring iron deficiency tolerance in Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) systems.
  3. Adoption of DSR Technology: Analyzing determinants and impacts among small-scale rice farmers in Tanzania, Kenya, and Mozambique.
  4. DSR Technology in Kenya: Establishing cultivation practices in irrigated ecosystems as a solution to the golden apple snail problem.
  5. Remote Sensing Models: Developing hyperspectral models for DSR adaptation traits in various environments.
  6. Modeling Rice Carbon Footprint: Understanding and mitigating the environmental impacts of rice farming.
  7. Economic Analysis of Rice Technologies: Investigating adoption, impacts, and consumer preferences.
  8. Weedy Rice Ecology and Biology: Creating integrated management strategies for resilient DSR systems in a changing climate.

Eligibility Criteria

General Requirements

All applicants must:

  • Be involved in rice science or related systems research.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • Be willing to work on one of the identified research areas.
  • Not exceed 35 years of age at the time of application.

PhD Applicants

  • Must have completed all PhD coursework or be enrolled in a PhD program.
  • Be able to complete their thesis and program within 1.5 years.
  • If applying for a sandwich program, the application must be endorsed by their university supervisor.

MS Applicants

  • Must have admission to an approved MS program.
  • Be able to complete the program within 12 months.

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is open to students from MSI institutions in the US and local universities in the following countries:

  • Philippines
  • Bangladesh
  • India
  • Nepal
  • Mozambique
  • Tanzania
  • Kenya

There are currently one MSI PhD slot and two slots for local universities (one MS and one PhD).
